CHAPTER TEN
It was a relief to get back to Gladstone. I was never so happy to see those towers in my life. The night at the Hardcastle Hotel had been both exhilarating and frightening. My legalese mind had taken over and gotten the better of me. I was afraid I had made the worst first impression possible.
In my room, I finally had time to think. I had left New York to get away from all the hassles of city life, and it felt like I had just been thrown right back into it. Still, here I seemed to be able to cope much better with the craziness; it was not as intense as it would be in a big city. No, they were the same white-collar people I had to deal with, but their lives had their own flair. They reflected a world that I genuinely wanted to be a part of.
I thought about my own family line, and I wondered what kind of courage it took to take on a venture like building your own castle. Could I do that? It was an attractive thought, no doubt about it. Liamâs Hardcastle Hotel was grand enough to impress anybody. I wasnât sure I could do anything on that level, but maybe I could find a suitable property and build a little something on my own. I was sure I could handle something small and intimate.
But for now, my thoughts had to go back to Mrs. OâBrian. She had been through a terrible ordeal, and I wasnât so sure she was out of it. When we finally had the all-clear to return home, we brought her home with us. It just wouldnât have been good to let her go back to that big rambling house all alone, so Grams set her up in the room next to mine. That way, I could keep an eye on both of them.
Now, back in my room alone, I could mentally break down everything that had happened since Iâd been there. For the first time, I was able to open up my computer and catch up on everything going on back in the States. But my eagerness to get down to business dissipated when I realized that there were more than two hundred emails I needed to answer. Most of them were from Peter. I couldnât deal with that now, so I sent him a quick reply, telling him to delegate my work because I would need more time than Iâd initially thought. Then I quickly shut it down again, and this time, I crawled in the bed and went to sleep.
The next morning, Grams gave me her car to drive Mrs. OâBrian to the garda station. I thought it was really insensitive of them to make her come down to the station rather than them coming to her. The thought of that Officer Hanlon really irritated me. I hoped that it wasnât him we were going to talk to; I didnât know just how well I could contain my temper if he started talking down to me again.
